by Laura Minor
Hi everyone, and welcome to our brand-new TV blog on the WFTHN website.
I am delighted to introduce myself as the Editor of this new section focusing on the history of women in/on television. As an Early Career Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Salford working in these areas, I am strongly committed to playing a crucial role in showcasing scholarly work, promoting new research, and advancing discussions in the field of feminist television studies.
So, what led to the creation of this blog series? Attending the DWFTHN conference at the University of Sussex this past summer, I met the incomparable Janet McCabe and Sarah Arnold, who were looking for someone to take on this role. The stars had aligned. I was already conscious that very few of us at the conference were examining TV, with film playing a prominent role in the fantastic scholarship undertaken by members associated with WFTHN. Working with CSTonline, WFTHN has thus carved out this dedicated space for those writing about TV. The idea is to give more prominence to television as a field of study, building on the amazing work that the WFTHN has already done.
Whether you’re embarking on a research project, want to give us a sneak preview of an article/book you’re writing, or have something important to say about women and television, we want to hear from you. The blog is looking for submissions of around 800-1200 words that (broadly) speak to women and television history. Themes will be announced at a later date. Please get in touch with me at l.j.minor@salford.ac.uk if you are considering a submission or have any queries.
This blog space will not only focus on sharing information but building a community where ideas are exchanged, diverse perspectives are respected, and meaningful discussions are had. Working with contributors, we will explore television through a gender-inclusive lens and celebrate the influential women who have left an indelible mark on our screens.
I look forward to working with you all (and stay tuned for future articles)!
