Membership

We warmly welcome new members. Membership is open to anyone committed to contributing to the development of women’s film and television history, such as academic researchers, professionals, enthusiasts, or local historians.

There are two ways to join us:

1) Members’ Listserv

This establishes the first level of membership, enabling the circulation between members of news and events.

Like access to our website—which circulates blogs and news about upcoming events/conferences, archives past events, and houses research resources—membership of the listserv is free.

Join the listserv here.

2) Full membership

This is available for an annual subscription of £20.00 (£10.00 for
students and unwaged) and provides access to our biennial conference, Doing Women’s Screen and Media Histories and to regular online events. The rationale for instituting membership fees and how to make payment follows.

Annual Membership Fee Explained

At the beginning of 2026, we introduced a small, annual membership fee to cover expenses related to WFTHN’s activities. Membership has grown in recent years to 500+ and, consequently, administration of the network has also increased.

To date, conferences, events, and the network’s website have been funded ad hoc through, for example, volunteer work and conference registration fees. Current activities include:

  • Website comprising
    • Noticeboard listing of upcoming events, festivals and conferences
    • Notification of new print and visual publications
    • Resource listings covering Archival sources; Bibliographic references; Organisations
    • Members’ Current Research
    • Projects Blogs on women’s film & television history
    • Archive of DWFTH conferences, WFTHN events and the Network’s history
  • Listserv linking researchers, teachers, producers of women’s film and television history
  • Occasional Online Events
  • The biennial Doing Women’s Screen and Media Histories conferences (note change of title following discussion at DWFTH 7)

However, lack of funds means that these activities are limited in their scope and operation. A small annual membership fee will enable us to improve and expand the Network’s activity, to widen its audience, to become more professional, and to better support the next generation’s women’s film and television scholarship.  Specifically, a membership fee will allow us to:

  • Upgrade the website to a paid, professional version.
  • Employ a designer to improve the functionality, operation, and look of the website.
  • Award an annual prize for an early career researcher or advanced PhD candidate for the most productive contribution to women’s film and television history.
  • Offer student bursaries to cover registration fees for and/or travel to the Doing Women’s Screen and Media Histories conference.

Although the focus of our website is the history of women working in the UK and Ireland and British and Irish women working abroad, we recognise that film and television workers may cross national boundaries, and that problems of colonial historiography and history-writing are shared internationally.  We therefore welcome members from anywhere in the world.

In line with similar organisations (BAFTSS, SCMS, MECCSA, Women & Silent Screen), WFTHN membership will be required for registration for our Doing Women’s Screen and Media Histories conferences and online events.  However, our website, blogs, and ListServe will continue to be open access to all.

Fees per UK financial year [from 1 April 2026]

  • £20.00 for regular members
  • £10.00 for students and unwaged

How to Pay Membership Subscriptions
Membership fees will eventually be paid through a secure online system. However, for this first year, payment should be made by bank transfer. The account, with Virgin Money, is in the name of Women’s Film & Television History Network. For those banking in the UK, the sort code is 82-12-08, the account number 10213774.

For those with non-UK bank accounts, the IBAN is GB03CLYD82120810213774 and the BIC is CLYDGB21842.

In all cases, please add your name as the reference.

The success of WFTHN depends on the activity of the membership and we thank you all for your continuing involvement and support.

If you have any problems or queries, please contact our Membership and Listserv Manager Shelley Cobb (s.cobb@soton.ac.uk).
