Recording of Women’s Authorship in Television: Online Event, 20 May 2025

1–2 minutes

On 20 May 2025, WFTHN hosted an online event to celebrate recent recent scholarship on women’s television authorship. See below for a recording of the event. The recording is in two parts.

Chairing this talk was WFTHN member Dr Sarah Arnold from Maynooth University, Ireland. Speaking about their scholarship were: Dr Laura Minor, Lecturer in Television Studies at the University of Salford, UK; Dr Sarah Louise Smyth, Lecturer in Film at the University of Essex, UK; and Dr Stefania Marghitu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media at the University of Alabama, USA.

Dr Laura Minor spoke about her book, Reclaiming Female Authorship in Contemporary UK Television Comedy (Edinburgh University Press, 2024), which is a timely exploration of women’s creative labour in British and Irish television comedy.

Dr Sarah Louise Smyth and Dr Stefania Marghitu spoke about their special dossier for New Review of Film and Television Studies titled “Women’s Authorship and Adaptation in Contemporary Television“.

Viewers should note that this event was disrupted by a user who wrote profanities and sexist language on the interactive whiteboard. This has been edited out in the video, but explains what is being referred to in Part 2. While WFTHN will look to tighten security in the future, this has also emboldened us in the urgency and importance of the feminist work we are all doing.
