Breaking the Sound Barrier: Women Sounding Out in British and Irish Film and Television
Breaking the Sound Barrier was a one-day event organised by the Women’s Film and TV History Network-UK/Ireland, in collaboration with BFI Southbank and supported by MeCCSA Women’s Media Studies Network.
Taking place on Saturday 18th June 2016, this one-day event focused on women’s role in the development and production in Britain and Ireland of sound as an integral part of the cinema and television experience. Given the paucity of known research into women’s work on sound media, this event aimed to take stock of past and present achievements and offer a broad introduction, from the pioneering days of British and Irish sound film to the experimental TV workshops of the 1980s, while looking ahead to new challenges and advocating for the development of new research projects.

This video compiles all of Celia Johnson’s voiceover utterances from BRIEF ENCOUNTER. It is a work of film-studies creative critical research that entailed much “material thinking” through the procedures of digitally collecting, handling and arranging the original film’s sequences. It is the third in a series of audiovisual film studies of Lean’s 1945 film, and the central role in it played by Celia Johnson’s character.
